In 1979, the major record label EMI released Shujaat Husain Khan’s first official album, The New Star on the Musical Horizon. At just 19 years old, Shujaat Husain Khan collaborated with Zakir Hussain—who would later become an iconic legend of the Tabla. The album features three traditional tracks: “Raga Bageshwari: Alap-Jod,” “Raga Bihag: Gat Drut: Tritaal,” and “Sindhi Kafi: Taal Kaharwa.” Despite his youth, Shujaat Husain Khan’s transcendent technique was already coming to light.

In 1984, the major label PolJazz—renowned for releasing many golden-age masterpieces of Polish Jazz—published a truly unique live album titled Shujaat Khan & Sławomir Kulpowicz – Live On Tour In Poland. This recording remains one of the definitive fusion masterpieces of the 1980s, where Jazz intersected with folk traditions. Furthermore, it marks the historic first collaboration between an Eastern European jazz musician and an Indian Sitar maestro. Sławomir Kulpowicz was a legendary Polish virtuoso of both jazz and modern classical piano; in the history of Polish Jazz, he holds a position of immense prestige, standing alongside such giants as trumpet master Tomasz Stańko, master drummer Jacek Kochan, and the multi-instrumentalist saxophone legend Zbigniew Namysłowski.

Years later, in 2006, Sławomir once again invited Shujaat to perform at the historic Warsaw Philharmonic Hall. This collaboration resulted in the magnificent fusion quartet live album, Shujaat Khan & Sławomir Kulpowicz – Live At Warsaw Philharmonic Hall. In that remarkable era, the essence of traditional jazz met the soul of Indian classical music, marking one of the most significant cross-cultural musical encounters in the history of India and Poland.

For an Indian Sitar maestro, Shujaat Husain Khan is perhaps the only one capable of simultaneously captivating three distinct worlds: the purists of Indian Classical music, the dedicated followers of the ECM label, and the enthusiasts of World Fusion. He is a rare artist who truly transcends the boundaries between listener demographics.

The protagonists of this work are the Iranian Kamancheh maestro Kayhan Kalhor and the Sitar master Shujaat Husain Khan, with the esteemed Tabla virtuoso Sandeep Das playing a vital role.

《The Rain》

The creative blueprint for The Rain originated from "Ghazal," a duo featuring Shujaat Husain Khan and Kayhan Kalhor (later joined by tabla player Sandeep Das). Ghazal is dedicated to the most exquisite and sublime contemporary fusion of Indian and Persian classical traditions. Today, the ensemble enjoys widespread renown within the global World Music and Fusion scenes. In 2004, The Rain earned a Grammy Award nomination for "Best Traditional World Music Album.”

Returning to the traditional sphere of Indian Classical collaborations, Shujaat Husain Khan reveals a side of his artistry that is deeply rooted and pure. The renowned New York-based label, India Archive Music, is esteemed for discovering and releasing historical recordings of legendary masters within the Indian Classical tradition. Shujaat Husain Khan’s vast discography includes at least nine significant historical recordings published by India Archive Music. In these albums, he demonstrates his profound mastery and virtuosity across a wide array of Ragas and diverse traditional styles of Indian Classical music.

The Sublime Union: Where the Sitar Meets

the Human Voice

——Shujaat Khan

"My greatest achievement in life lies in successfully establishing my own identity as 'Shujaat Khan' before a global audience. They appreciate me not because of the ancestral glory behind me, but for the music that flows directly from my fingertips and my voice."

—Shujaat Khan

Ustad Shujaat Khan stands unique in the contemporary music world, renowned for the seamless fusion of his extraordinary vocal talent with his sitar performance. His "Pure Gayaki Ang" (singing style) utilizes the strings to exquisitely mimic the nuances and spirit of the human voice, imbuing the instrument with the soul of a singer. During his concerts, he often intersperses his playing with improvisational folk songs or lyric poetry, creating an intimate, natural atmosphere filled with emotional resonance—a striking contrast to traditional instrumentalists.

While performing, he frequently breaks into spontaneous song, naturally weaving poetic forms such as folk music, Sufi chants, or Ghazals (a lyrical poetic form originating from 7th-century Arabia) into his instrumental execution. His voice, filled with spirituality and warmth, adds an incredibly rich, multi-layered auditory experience to the sitar performance.

Arkodeep Das

Arkodeep is a young Tabla player from the Benares Style of School . Tabla percussion is the most commonly played drum set in North Indian music. It is the instrument most frequently used to accompany vocal and instrumental music, and dance; whereas its primary function is to maintain the metric cycle in which the compositions are set. Though the tabla is essentially an accompanying instrument, the tabla players are also soloists in their own right, and many have vast repertoires of elaborate compositions handed down orally from generation to generation.

Arkodeep is one of the finest young table players who is slowly becoming famous for his control and artistry on Tabla.  He is one of the most sought after musicians of his age who started learning at the tender age of four under the guidance of Shri Satya Priya Dutta and Shri Birendra Ghosh in Purnia(Bihar).

Later on joined the Gurukul of great tabla maestro Pt.Kumar Bose at Kolkata and started learning advanced lessons of tabla from Pt.Kumar Bose of Banaras Gharana.

Completed graduation and post graduation from Rabindra Bharati University in Fine Arts with the subject Instrumental Music (Percussion).

Awarded with "Nirod Boron Memorial Prize" for BA(HONS)2019 from Rabindra Bharati University. Sangeet Praveen in Tabla from Prayag Sangeet Samiti , Allahabad. Got CCRT National scholarship in Tabla.
