A Note from the Curator
In musical performance, Dasom Baek's mastery of the Daegeum is now internationally recognized as one of the world's top masters, and she is an officially certified performer of an "Intangible Cultural Heritage." In terms of musical philosophy, she is a versatile virtuoso who bridges tradition and the avant-garde, all while maintaining a completely open attitude toward collaboration.
Dasom Baek comes with a curiosity to "take a peek" into China's improvisation scene and the expectation of achieving "perfect synergy" with local Chinese improvisational musicians on stage. She is embracing the role of a cultural ambassador on this journey to connect with friends both north and south, utilizing the Daegeum (Korean: 대금, Chinese: 大岑笛 or 大笒笛), an ancient national instrument of the Korean ethnic group (Chaoxianzu).
Throughout the history of ethnic music, the ancient Korean Daegeum (large bamboo flute) and the Indian Tabla drums are rarely seen together in improvisational collaborations. The upcoming performance at Tsinghua Xiaoyao Night will mark the first time these two iconic ethnic instruments engage in a completely improvised dialogue.
Both Dasom and Bivakar are musicians who have a deep grounding in traditional styles, and who then extend their respective ethnic instruments into modern, avant-garde, and multi-genre fusion directions. This concert will be one of the most important stops on Dasom Baek's tour in China.
