This fall, Harmonious Melody is delighted to invite from France to China Electro Jazz Duo QR CODE 2 founded by virtuoso keyboardist Thierry Maillard and trumpet master Stéphane Belmondo.

One is of Viking origin, and the other is from Tuscany. In this musical biography, they draw upon both their differences and the commonalities that their life journeys have brought them.

Belmondo has produced critically acclaimed albums and won multiple awards, including Best French Album and Best Artist at the Victoires du Jazz awards.

QR Code 2 was born from the desire of pianist Thierry Maillard and trumpeter Stéphane Belmondo to pay tribute to guitarist Sylvain Luc, their friend who passed away in March 2024.

Together, under the name MLB Trio (Maillard Luc Belmondo), the three artists planned to record in 2025 the followup to their album Birka released in November 2021.

In the meantime, Thierry Maillard delved into the use of a range of electronic keyboards, both in the studio with the album Moog Project, released in April 2023, and on tour.

That's why while Birka was purely acoustic, QR Code 2 explores synthesis with electronics. Its twelve tracks compose a very cinematic universe between jazz, electro, neo-classical, and sound design.

QR Code 2 was shaped from August 9 to 15, 2024 at Recall Studio in Pompignan, France. Without rehearsing before the recording, Thierry and Stéphane were guided by the search for textures, the desire to offer a piano-trumpet duo that differs from what has already been done. In this studio where Thierry Maillard records all his albums, he fully trusts Philippe Gaillot, sound engineer and friend of thirty years. While Thierry surrounded himself with fourteen keyboards, Stéphane added effects pedals to his trumpet, bugle, and shells. With the mix or stacking of sounds, it’s an orchestra that one imagines while listening to their duo.

One of the distinctive features of QR Code 2 consists of the drum loops created by Thierry with the PULSAR-23, an analog drum machine that creates rhythms on the spot, without memorizing sequences as a computer would, which was a real choice during the recording. The idea was indeed to maintain freedom and improvisation, dear to both artists: "In no case do electro machines lead us to music. They come as a complement to what we carry within us as jazz musicians," Thierry specifies. This philosophy in the use of machines, as well as the reference to the boundless creativity of groups from the 1970s / 1980s (Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Chick Corea), has nourished Thierry Maillard's projects since his Moog Project.

In QR Code 2, the eight tracks written by Thierry Maillard and the four tracks composed by Stéphane Belmondo appear in the order in which they were recorded. A tribute to Sylvain Luc, "Hegaldia" (fly, in Basque) opens the album with the contemplation of an acoustic piano-trumpet, before the machines come in. The inspiration from nature and animals, fundamental in Thierry Maillard's life, is reflected in the titles of several tracks: "The World of Animals", "The Song of Whales", "Fugeltrekk" (the migration of birds, in Norwegian), "The Sound of The Forest". Other titles are nods: "CTI" referring to the sound of Freddie Hubbard on the label of the same name, "MP" in connection with Michel Petrucciani.
